is GRE? |
Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) general test aims to
measure the verbal reasoning, quantitative ability,
critical reading and analytical writing of the
candidate. The exam is not related to any specific
area of study and is general in nature. GRE general
test is a fully computerized and computer adaptive
test.

| 2. Who takes it and why? |
Students
seeking Masters / PhD studies in USA and
other countries (Except MBA courses) take the
general GRE test. The scores reflect the ability
of the candidate and provide a measure for comparing
the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating
grades and recommendation.

| 3. Can I get admission in a US school without
GRE? |
Yes,
there are some universities in US, that grant
admission without GRE, but it is advisable to
go for the VISA interview only after you have

| 4. When Can I appear for the test? |
The
test is held all the year round in different cities
of India and other countries. You can register at
any center of your choice.

| 5. What are the format and the duration of the
test? |
The
total time duration of the appointment is 4 hours.
The GRE general test has three sections…
1. Analytical writing
I. Analysis of an issue
(45 minutes)
II. Analysis of an argument
(30 minutes)
2. Quantitative Ability--- 28 questions in 45 minutes
3. Verbal Ability--- 30 questions in 30 minutes
There can be an additional
quantitative or verbal section at the end of the
exam but that is not marked.
It is referred as an experimental section. |
6. How can I register for
the test? What is the exam fee? |
One
can register online or via mail or telephone. The
generally advised method to register is doing it
online. The fee for the GRE general test is $170.

| 7. How many times can I appear for the test? |
One
can appear only once in a calendar month and a maximum
of five times a year. You have the option to cancel
your test before leaving the examination hall but
before the scores are seen by you on the computer.

| 8. If I appear more than once which scores will
the university accept? |
ETS
will transmit all the available scores but generally
universities accept your best score.

| 9. When will I receive my scores? |
The
scores are sent to the student approximately 3-4
weeks after the exam.

| 10. How many universities can I select to transmit
the scores after the exam and how to send the additional
score reports (ASRs) to other universities? |
You
can mark up to four universities after your exam,
where your official scores will be transmitted
free of cost. To send ASRs to other universities
one can request ETS via phone or mail or fax a
request. The charges are $15 per score recipient

| 11. How long are the scores valid? |
The
scores are valid for 5 years.
|
| 12. What is the maximum score and what is considered
a good score? |
The
total maximum marks of GRE general tests are 1600.
Analytical writing is assessed on a scale of 6
points. Scores above 1400 are considered good.
